Tanzania Family Safari and luxury tours in
Tanzania Adventure
DAY 1 - ARUSHA, TANZANIA
Upon arrival into Kilimanjaro International
Airport in Tanzania this evening you will be
met and transferred to the Mount Meru Game
Lodge. Nestled between the peaks of Mount
Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro the lodge is
located within 33 acres manicured gardens
and the tranquil waters of the Usa River.
The Lodge and its grounds are also home to a
variety of birds and animals that live out
their lives here at the Animal Sanctuary.
All 17 rooms have a veranda with comfortable
chairs where guests may sit during the late
afternoons enjoying the surroundings,
watching the animal and birdlife. Other
amenities consist of a terrace, bar, lounge,
restaurant and gazebo.
The main emphasis of the Game Sanctuary is
to provide safe haven to African plains game
and birds. These include eland, ostriches,
waterbucks, zebras, buffalo, small
carnivores such as Monitor lizards, small
wild cats and of course the enormous variety
of birdlife who come to feed, breed and
enjoy the unique freedom offered here. The
majority of the animals were once either
orphaned or badly injured and were brought
to the sanctuary for rehabilitation. The
Sanctuary is supported entirely by the
Lodge.
Overnight - Mt. Meru Game Lodge (late snack)
DAYS 2/3 - SINYA
After breakfast you will be met by your
guide and depart for a remote area in the
shadow of Mt. Kilimanjaro called Sinya, a
private wildlife reserve on Maasai land.
Flood plains, hills, acacia woodland and a
memorable landscape of Mt. Meru and Longido
Peaks give life to one of the most
beautiful, pristine, wild areas of Northern
Tanzania. This is the arid land of Sinya,
one of the few areas in Africa where huge
Elephant Bulls, more than 50 years old,
carrying tusks of considerable size, are
regularly seen. These bulls, some of them
living permanently in the zone, together
with herds of mothers and calves, migrate
from Amboseli National Park to Sinya in
search of water and food. Because of their
familiarity with safari vehicles in Amboseli
(Kenya) , they allow you to approach them at
very short distances, allowing for excellent
photographic opportunities. Most of them
have been monitored by Cynthia Moss in
Amboseli for more than 25 years and form one
of the healthiest and most balanced Elephant
populations of the whole African continent.
The Maasai in Sinya still live in the
traditional way and are spectacularly
dressed and follow all the traditional
ceremonies. They are very friendly and
unexposed to the commercial relationship
with tourists that is common in other more
visited areas. You will have opportunities
to be led on wildlife walks, visit the
Maasai villages and market, and participate
in ceremonies if the occasion arises. While
in Sinya you will spend two nights at Kambi
ya Tembo, a small luxury tented camp that
looks directly at Mt Kilimanjaro and is the
only facility in the reserve. Activities
while at Kambi ya Tembo include game drives
in open 4x4 safari vehicles, bird watching
and walking safaris escorted by Maasai
warriors. Also, during free times the
Askaris (watchmen) will patrol day and night
for animals, and the area will be cleared by
our head watchman well before children are
allowed to walk or play.
Today after you arrive and eat lunch you
will depart in the late afternoon on an
evening game drive returning in time for
drinks and story telling around the camp
fire with the enormous African sky overhead.
Excellent meals are served under the trees
or in the dining tent. Overnight - Kambi Ya
Tembo (all meals & activities)
DAY 4 - SINYA / ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK
Arise for an early breakfast then go for a
short game drive in the reserve before
departing back to Arusha. En route you will
visit Arusha National Park. Set between the
slopes of Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro this
small park is one of Tanzania’s hidden gems
and one of the few places where you will
have a good chance to see the rare Black &
White Colobus monkeys, which inhabit the
Ndurdoto Forest. The parks contains a series
of shimmering alkaline lakes, which attract
large flocks of flamingo’s and a variety of
birds, along with elephant, buffalo, zebra,
gazelle, wart hog, hippo and an amazing
number of giraffe. The rare black rhino is
also found here.
One of the highlights of today’s game drive
is a short walk to a viewing area
overlooking the miniature Ngurdoto Crater,
which is completely reserved for the
animals, so no one is allowed to go down
into it. From high above the tiny dots that
appear on the crater floor are actually huge
Buffalo, that feed in the marsh grasses.
Enjoy a picnic lunch, before heading back to
Arusha arriving at the Mt. Meru Game Lodge
in the afternoon. Relax for the rest of the
day. Overnight - Mt. Meru Game Lodge (all
meals & activities)
DAYS 5/6 - TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK
Arise early this morning for breakfast, then
depart for Tarangire National Park,
Tanzania’s third largest wildlife reserve.
As you enter the park you will see the
ancient Baobab trees that dot the
grasslands. Elephant, leopard, lion and many
plains game can be found here as well as
eland, Maasai giraffe, Grant's and
Thompson's' gazelle, hartebeest, impala and
the usual collections of baboons, warthog
and ostrich. The landscape is as diverse as
the wildlife, with zones ranging from
grassland to woodland and deep gully
vegetation to scattered rocky hilltops. The
Tarangire River meanders through the park,
enticing over 6,000 elephants to the are
during the dry season and a variety of
colorful birds.
Your accommodations for the next two nights
will be at the Tarangire River Camp. Just
outside the western border of the park, the
camp sits on a high ridge over looking the
Tarangire River. Views in the distance of
Mt. Meru, Kilimanjaro and Ngorongoro,
oldonyo lengai, and the Great Rift Valley
can be seen from every corner of the Camp.
Activities include wildlife viewing in the
park and walking and hiking. After lunch
we’ll enjoy an afternoon game drive followed
by drinks around the fire where we can
discuss our day. Dinner is served under the
stars or in the dining gazebo encircling the
base of an ancient Baobab Tree.
On your second day you have another full day
of game drives in this spectacular park
along with a visit to a local village.
Elephant herds of 100 to 300 individuals are
often seen here. Overnight - Tarangire River
Camp (all meals & activities)
DAY 7 - LAKE MANYARA / NGORONGORO FARM HOUSE
Arise early this morning and after tea or
coffee, you’ll leave Tarangire for a short
drive across the Great Rift Valley to Lake
Manyara National Park. Although only 205 sq.
miles in size this enchanting park is noted
for its beauty and incredibly lush acacia
forest of giant fig and mahogany trees,
which are home to troops of baboons and blue
monkeys. The park is also home to large
numbers of buffalo, giraffe, elephant,
hippo, impala and the Hippo Pool, where
large numbers usually gather. Well known for
its birds (over 400 species), Lake Manyara
is one of the few places you will see the
comical Ground Hornbill and the Crested
Eagle.
After spending several hours in the park and
stopping for a picnic breakfast, you’ll
continue to the Ngorongoro Highlands,
driving through small villages and passing
small farms on your way To the Ngorongoro
Farm House. The Ngorongoro Farm house is set
on 500 acres of gardens, pasture and coffee
plants. It faces the Oldeani Volcano at the
foot of Ngorongoro Crater and has 22
charming cottages that look out at the
rolling hills, a pool, dining room an
lounge. After lunch you will visit the local
primary school in the small town of Karatu.
Then return to the lodge with time to cool
off in the pool. Overnight - Ngorongoro Farm
House (all meals & activities)
DAYS 8/9 - NGORONGORO CRATER
This morning after a wonderful breakfast and
time to stretch your legs you will leave the
farm and drive the short distance to the
"eighth wonder of the world", the Ngorongoro
Crater. Driving up the slopes of the lush
green mountain and arriving at the rim of
the crater , the first glimpse takes your
breath away. The floor of this collapsed
volcano spreads for 102 sq. miles and the
walls are 2000 ft. high, a truly awesome
sight. The crater floor is a virtual "Noah's
Ark", inhabited by almost every species of
wildlife indigenous to East Africa. It
contains a river, several swamps, a soda
lake - complete with flamingoes, a forest
and open plains.
After checking in to your award winning
lodge, perched high on the crater rim and
enjoying lunch, you will descend the crater
walls and spend the afternoon and early
evening wildlife viewing on the crater
floor.
The next morning, after an early breakfast
you will depart with a picnic lunch and
spend the entire day exploring this
magnificent wonder. Overnight - Serena
Crater Lodge (all meals & activities)
DAYS 10/11/12 - SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
This morning after breakfast and a final
glimpse of the crater, you’re off to the
infamous Serengeti National Park, the symbol
of Africa's wildlife. The word Serengeti
comes from the Maasai language meaning
"endless plains". The 6,900 sq. mile (18,000
sq. km) park is inhabited by more than 2
large million animals including more than a
million wildebeest, hundreds of thousands of
plains zebras, and Thomson’s gazelles. Large
predators including lions, cheetahs, and
hyenas are drawn to the area by this
abundance of prey which migrate throughout
the park. Many smaller animals – rock hyrax,
bat eared foxes, mongoose, honey badger,
jackals, monkeys, baboon and African hare
inhabit the area along with nearly 500
species of birds. Off road you’ll find the
"Kopjes", massive boulder islands of granite
standing in a sea of grass, provide shelter
to a great variety of plants and animals,
from the elusive leopard to the tiny dik dik.
Along the way to the Serengeti you will stop
at the famous “Oldupai Gorge”, where Dr.
Louis and Mary Leakey made their discovery
of early man. Here you will visit the small
museum and attend a short lecture describing
the archeological digs and geology of the
gorge.
Your lodging for the next three nights will
be either at Ndutu Lodge, or the Serengeti
Serena Lodge, depending on where the herds
of wildebeest and zebras are migrating. From
December to May, the migration is clustered
in the southern Serengeti between the
Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Lake Ndutu.
The Ndutu Safari Lodge is a delightful small
lodge that sits back from the lake in a
beautiful setting. It is known for it’s
friendly staff and wonderful food, and the
Genets (small nocturnal catlike animal) that
wander the rafters in the main building. At
night you can sit around the campfire and
look up at the magnificent African sky,
while listening to the sounds of animals in
the distance. In the morning you'll be
awakened by the sounds of birds.
During June the herds began to move north
into the central and western Serengeti and
up into the Grumeti River area. From June
through November your accommodations will be
at the beautiful Serengeti Serena Lodge, a
luxury lodge where you stay in a
stone-built, traditionally-thatched 'Rondavel',
featuring natural stone bathrooms, wildwood
balconies, rope-lashed staircases,
leopard-print drapes and intricately carved
furniture, all with views of the endless
plains below. The lodge has 66 guests rooms,
a pool, fire pit, barbecue area, restaurant,
