Sweetwaters
Sweetwaters is 20,000 acres of privately owned
wilderness in the heart of the Laikipia area of Kenya.
The landscape is mainly open grassy plains, thorny
thickets and acacia woodland. The Uaso Nyiro river runs
through the reserve and there are a number of waterholes
and dams. The reserve has a network of tracks for game
drives allowing visitors to explore the reserve and to
see a wide variety of wildlife species. Sweetwaters is
noted for its black rhino and elephant, hippo, lion,
giraffe, zebra, eland, warthog, oryx, impala, gazelles
as well as many other species may be seen. Night game
drives may be taken at Sweetwaters giving you the
possibility of seeing some of the nocturnal animals like
aardvark or even leopard. As this is a private reserve
there are fewer visitors than in the main national
parks, offering a more exclusive wildlife experience.
Within Sweetwaters there is a chimpanzee sanctuary where
rescued animals are being looked after by a dedicated
team. A visit to the sanctuary is a rewarding
experience. At the visitors' information centre there is
a small museum and nearby a tame black rhino, named
Morani and reared as an orphan by the Kenya Wildlife
Service, has been given a protected area to live. You
can approach this fully grown adult male black rhino
quite safely on foot, escorted by a ranger.
Gamewatchers Safaris clients visiting Sweetwaters have
two wildlife activities included each day with a choice
of game drive, visit to the chimpanzee sanctuary and
Morani the rhino, escorted walk and bush breakfast,
night game drive or camel trek.

SWEET WATERS GAME RESERVE- SAFARIS
Nestled between Mt. Kenya to the east and
the Aberdares Mountains to the west,
Sweetwaters Game Reserve is a privately held
reserve covering some 24,000 acres. You stay
in tents adjacent to a waterhole, which
provides for a constant procession of
animals taking their turn at the precious
resource.
The reserve boasts a plethora of wildlife -
over 400 species of birds, lion, elephant,
rhino and cheetah to name just a few.
Morani, a black rhino, was rescued as a baby
after he was found wandering near his mother
who had been killed by poachers in Amboseli
National Park. After having been taken to
three or four other locations where
unfortunately his safety was put at risk by
both the presence of poachers and attacks by
other rhinos, Morani came to Sweetwaters
where he lives in his own 100-acre
enclosure, protected 24-hours by armed
guards.
Also at Morani's Boma (which means "warrior"
in Masai) you will find Carol, a tame
warthog. Carol was brought to the Sanctuary
when she was found abandoned by her mother
on the Ranch, and she lives in a smaller
enclosure near Morani. She often ambles
around the compound, and loves to greet
visitors personally.
A 200-acre Chimpanzee sanctuary has been set
up at Sweetwaters Game Reserve. A visit to
this Sanctuary and the 30-minute boat ride
(subject to fine weather) on the river among
the chimps is a must. The aim of the
project, initiated by Lonrho East Africa,
Kenya Wildlife Services and the Jane Goodall
Institute, was to set up a colony where
chimps could be introduced, rehabilitated
and taught to fend for themselves in an area
similar to their natural living conditions.
Priority is given to orphaned and abused
chimps. The Sanctuary currently has 24
chimps, including two babies born in the
Sanctuary. An information centre near the
chimps' enclosure gives you amazing insight
into the chimpanzees - did you know that
they have 98.6% of our genes? After walking
through the vast information and chimp
paraphernalia you leave the center with the
feeling that you must do something to stop
this tragic "chimp trade".
