Giraffe Manor - Nairobi
The Giraffe Manor, built in 1932 by Sir David
Duncan, is situated on 140 acres of land just a

capital city. In 1974, Jock Leslie-Melville,
grandson of a Scottish earl, and his wife Betty,
who also founded the African Fund for Endangered
Wildlife (AFEW), bought the Manor. They then
moved five babies of the highly endangered
Rothschild giraffe to their property where they
have been successfully reared and they now have
their own babies. When Jock passed away, Betty
decided to open her house, now called the
Giraffe Manor, to visitors. |

Swara Plains Cottages - Nairobi Outskirts
Swara Plains Cottages are located on the
Athi-Kapiti Plains Just outside Nairobi Town.
Both Mount Kenya, 100 miles to the north, and
Mount Kilimanjaro, equidistant to the south, are

Swara Plains Cottages sits on a gently rolling
terrain with immense views and big skies that
are so much a part of high savannah Africa's
beauty and majesty. Initiated by David Hopcraft,
a third- generation Kenyan and conservationist,
he began experiments on Swara Plains with the
support of Cornell University and the National
Science Foundation comparing the advantages of
wild over domestic animals. 'Duma' a Warner Bros
feature is based on the Hopcrafts Story.
The Swara Plains conservancy and surrounding
area is home to many species of plains animals
including zebra, giraffe, ostrich, numerous
antelope and many, many more.
